Spain has a lot more national holidays than our own Netherlands. In 2022, there will already be 14 official holidays on the calendar in Spain. Of these, 8 are celebrated at a national level, so throughout the country. The other 6 holidays are determined at a local level. This means that the autonomous regions themselves decide which holidays they want to celebrate. These autonomous regions also have their own additional holidays. There are also other local holidays in Spain.

Holidays Calendar – Calendarios Laboreales
Every year the Spanish government releases the Labor Calendars out. This lists the official holidays that are celebrated throughout Spain. There are 8 days that are celebrated nationally. This means that all of Spain is free and everything is closed.
As previously indicated, there are (autonomous) regions, cities or villages that have their own public holidays have. These local holidays are therefore also determined at a local level. For example, a regional holiday that is celebrated in Barcelona (located in an autonomous region) may not be celebrated in 'la comunidad Madrid'.
Long weekend – Puentes
Many of these holidays coincide with national holidays and then bridges given. This means that if a holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday, a long weekend is given off. This way, Spaniards can enjoy a long weekend.
The bridges in 2022
This year, there are 3 puentes scheduled on the Spanish calendar.
Bridge of Holy Week
From 14 to 17 April 2022 there will be a puente in all of Spain. This is Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and also the Easter weekend. In Catalonia there is also an extra holiday on 18 April.
Bridge of All Saints
Because November 1st falls on a Tuesday this year, many Spaniards will also take or get Monday October 31st off. This way, they can also enjoy an extra long weekend in November.
Bridge of December
This year, December 6th falls on a Tuesday and December 8th on a Thursday. That is why many Spaniards will take or get Wednesday and Monday or Wednesday and Friday off. This is actually a mini-vacation, because it is just a nice 6 days off!
