When you move, you will of course have to report your change of address to various authorities. This is certainly one of the most important tasks during a move. Have you never reported a change of address before and do you have no idea where to start? This is completely normal and we can tell you that many people are in the same boat as you.
To whom should I report a change of address?
How are you supposed to know which authorities you need to report your move to yourself and which authorities will automatically receive notification of your move? Do they even exist or do you have to do all of this yourself? For all these questions and more, we advise you to read this article carefully. We have tried to summarize everything as simply as possible for you so that we can help you report your change of address for your move. So read on quickly!
Report your move to the municipality
You report your change of address when you move to another location at the municipality. Of course, you must report this yourself to the new municipality where you are going to live and not to your old municipality. Perhaps you will continue to live in the same municipality. In that case, you only need to report your change of address.
As you may have read earlier, when you move from another municipality to a new municipality, you must report this to the new municipality. You must register yourself as a new resident. This is probably because you have bought a house there or perhaps rented a house. In this case, you do not have to deregister from the old municipality, because the new municipality will do this automatically for you.
Proof of deregistration
As you have read, you no longer need to deregister from your old municipality, because the new municipality will do this automatically for you. When you report this, you will also receive proof of deregistration. This is a statement from the municipality that is issued stating that you have been officially deregistered.
Personal Records Database (BRP)
When you report your move to the municipality, it will automatically enter your new details in the Personal Records Database (BRP). You can report your change of address in various ways.
Passing by the town hall
You can make an appointment to visit the town hall. There you can report your change of address at the counter. The municipality will then inform some authorities of your move. By the way, don't forget to bring a valid ID!
Submit in writing
If you don't have time to go to the town hall, you can also report the move in writing.
Change online
Fortunately, more and more municipalities now have the option to arrange your affairs online. You can do this with your DigiD. You simply log in and can report everything digitally. However, it is wise to first consult the website of the municipality in question for this option, because the other municipality may not yet have this option.
When should you report the change?
You must report your move within 4 weeks before or at the latest 5 days after your move. The date you note on the declaration as the moving date is then also the official date of the move. Do you choose the option to report the change at the latest 5 days after your move? Then the declaration date will be noted as the moving date. Make sure that you report everything on time, because municipalities can impose a fine of up to €325.00 if you do not do this. Were you able to arrange everything properly on time? Then it is wise to always keep your written confirmation.
Agencies that are informed by the municipality
After your change of address, the municipality will pass on the change to a number of agencies. These include:
- Tax Authorities
- Education Executive Agency (DUO)
- Police
- RDW
- Social Insurance Bank (SVB)
- Hospitals
- Health insurers
It is very time-saving that you do not have to inform all these agencies yourself about your new address. Please note that it can sometimes take a few weeks for all changes to be implemented. Therefore, in the meantime, it may be wise to ask the new residents of your old address to keep mail for you so that you can collect it later. View more authorities that are automatically notified when moving.
Moving service for your mail
You can also use a moving service for the mail. You can do this at PostNL, but certainly also at other postal companies. The handy thing about this system is that you only have to give your new home address to the postal company and that they will arrange everything else for you. This way you don't have to go to your old address again for mail and you don't have to send separate moving notices to companies, because you will receive your mail at the new address. The postal company does charge a small fee for this.
Finally
As you have read, you do need to arrange a few things before your change of address is complete. Do this in time so that other authorities will also receive your change of address in time. Are you not sure how this works in your municipality? Then you can of course always consult their website. Can't find anything about this online on their website? Then you can always contact the municipality in question by telephone so that an employee can help you with this.
